Forget everything you know about Copenhagen as a city of bicycles and a relaxed pace. This weekend, September 19 and 20, the city becomes a racetrack. For the first time ever, Copenhagen is hosting the World Athletics Road Running Championships, only the second edition of this championship ever held (the first was in Riga, 2023), and it’s not just an elite spectacle to watch from the sidelines. This is one of the rare world championships where everyone, with nothing more than a decent pair of running shoes, races on the same day, on the same route, as the fastest people on the planet.

65,000 reasons, before the race even starts

65,000 participants. That’s the total number of people running through Copenhagen this weekend, the largest number ever gathered at a single World Athletics championship. Of those, 35,000 spots are reserved for the half marathon (long sold out), 20,000 for the 5K, and 10,000 for the mile. Just a few hundred meters ahead of them, around 500 elite athletes from around the world are racing for six world titles.

What it means to share the course with world champions

This isn’t some smaller, regional event. Six world titles will be awarded on Copenhagen’s asphalt this weekend, and the fastest people on the planet will run the very same route you will, just a little earlier that same morning.

Schedule, minute by minute

Saturday, September 19 10:10am – Women’s mile 10:30am – Men’s mile 2:10pm – Women’s 5K 2:40pm – Men’s 5K

Sunday, September 20 9:10am – Women’s half marathon 9:45am – Men’s half marathon

Where the routes go

Saturday’s mile runs down Østerbrogade in a distinctive V-shape, through a high-energy “power zone” at Trianglen where the crowd traditionally makes the loudest noise in the city, finishing right by Parken Stadium. The 5K course winds through the historic Nyboder district, one of the oldest and most picturesque parts of the city, and along Copenhagen’s lakes in both directions, giving spectators a chance to see the runners twice.

Sunday’s half marathon uses the same, well-established route the regular Copenhagen Half Marathon has run in recent years, tested and approved by nearly 30,000 runners in previous editions, finishing in Fælledparken, which becomes the central festival hub for both days, music, crowds, energy, all in one place.

The medal that ties it all together

What makes this weekend special isn’t just the route, it’s also a small, deliberate message built into the medal design. The medals awarded at the World Championships in Copenhagen are designed so that the world champion and the very last amateur to cross the finish line receive an identical object, same design, same weight, same meaning. The message behind it is intentional: no matter how fast you run, that day, you’re part of the same story as the fastest people in the world.

Why this is genuinely cool

Few world championships let amateurs literally share the course with the best in the world, instead of keeping them behind a barrier as spectators. This weekend, someone who’s only been training for a few months can finish the race and take home an official medal from a real World Championship, while, somewhere ahead of them, through those same streets, new world champions crossed the line that very same morning.

If you happen to be in Copenhagen this weekend, you don’t even need to run to feel what it’s about. Just stand anywhere along the route, and let yourself get swept up in the same noise that, for one weekend, turns the entire city into one big, shared racetrack.
